Versailles at Christmas is one of the most magical outings near Paris. In December 2026 the palace hosts its evening Christmas show in the Hall of Mirrors, sacred music concerts in the Royal Chapel and opera at the Royal Opera House. With a private chauffeur from Paris, you can enjoy an evening at Versailles and be dropped back at your hotel without waiting for a late train in the cold.
This guide covers the 2026 Christmas programme, the best way to plan a day or evening visit, and how to get there by car.
How far is Versailles from Paris?
The Palace of Versailles is about 20 km south-west of central Paris. By car it usually takes 30 to 45 minutes from the 8th arrondissement, depending on traffic. The chauffeur drops you at the Place d'Armes, directly in front of the palace gates, and collects you there when you are ready to leave.
That short distance makes Versailles perfect for a half-day visit, a full day with the gardens and the Trianon estate, or an evening event followed by dinner.
The King's Tour: Christmas in the Hall of Mirrors
The highlight of the season is the King's Tour (Le Parcours du Roi), an evening visit and show held after the palace closes to regular visitors.
- Dates: 12 December 2026 to 2 January 2027
- Time: evening sessions from 18:00
- Duration: about 1 hour 10 minutes
- Where: the State Apartments and the Hall of Mirrors
- Price: tickets from around €32, free for children under 4
Costumed performers guide guests through the illuminated State Apartments, with music and dance in a baroque atmosphere. The 2026 edition has a Marie-Antoinette theme. It is popular with families during the school holidays, which run from 19 December to 4 January, so book tickets early.
Because the show ends in the evening, a chauffeur is especially useful. You avoid queuing for the RER C or a taxi in the dark, and you can go straight on to dinner in Versailles or back to Paris.
Christmas concerts at the Royal Chapel and Royal Opera
The palace also runs a winter music season. Highlights in late 2026 include:
- Mozart, Don Giovanni: at the Royal Opera, 7 to 15 November 2026
- Charpentier, Midnight Mass, and Bach, Magnificat: Saturday 5 December 2026
- Bach, Christmas Oratorio: Friday 11 December 2026
Hearing sacred music in the Royal Chapel, where the kings of France attended Mass, is a rare experience. Concerts sell out, so reserve as early as possible and let us know the start time so your chauffeur can plan the drop-off and return.
A suggested Christmas day at Versailles
Morning: the palace. Arrive at opening time to visit the State Apartments and the Hall of Mirrors before the crowds. Allow 2 hours with an audio guide. The palace is closed on Mondays, and it usually closes on Christmas Day and New Year's Day, so plan around those dates.
Lunch: the town of Versailles. The streets around the Notre-Dame market and the Saint-Louis quarter have good restaurants and cafés. Your chauffeur can take you there and wait.
Afternoon: the gardens and Trianon. In winter the gardens are bare but elegant, with long views along the Grand Canal. The Grand Trianon and Marie-Antoinette's estate are worth the walk, or your chauffeur can drive you closer to the Trianon entrance.
Evening: the King's Tour or a concert. End the day with the Christmas show in the Hall of Mirrors or a concert in the Royal Chapel, then return to Paris in comfort.
Tips for visiting Versailles in winter
- Check the opening hours. Winter hours are shorter than in summer, and the palace closes on Mondays.
- Book timed tickets online. Entry is by time slot, and December weekends are busy.
- Dress warmly for the gardens. The estate is large and exposed to the wind.
- Plan the evening return. After an evening show, public transport is slower and taxis are in high demand. A pre-booked chauffeur waits for you at the exit.
- Combine it with Christmas in Paris. On the way back, ask your chauffeur for a short detour along the Champs-Élysées to see the Christmas lights.
Which vehicle is right for your visit?
| Occasion | Recommended vehicle |
|---|---|
| Couple or business guests | Mercedes E-Class or S-Class |
| Family with children and pushchair | Mercedes V-Class |
| Anniversary or proposal | Mercedes-Maybach |
| Group of friends | Cadillac Escalade or Mercedes V-Class |
All bookings include a professional chauffeur. For evening events we track the show time and wait at the exit, so you never have to look for a ride in the cold.
Make it a Christmas gift or special occasion
An evening at Versailles is a memorable present for the holidays. Many of our clients book it as a surprise for a partner, a birthday or an anniversary, or as a thank-you for an important client.
A few ideas to make the evening feel special:
- Pair the show with dinner. Book a table in Versailles after the King's Tour, or reserve a restaurant in Paris and let your chauffeur take you straight there.
- Add a Paris lights tour. On the way back, drive past the illuminated Champs-Élysées, Place de la Concorde and the Eiffel Tower, which sparkles for five minutes at the start of every hour after dark.
- Choose the car for the occasion. A Mercedes-Maybach turns the journey itself into part of the gift.
- Plan a proposal. The Hall of Mirrors and the winter gardens are among the most romantic settings near Paris. Tell us your plan and we will adapt the timing.
For corporate guests, a private visit to Versailles followed by dinner is an elegant way to end the year with clients or partners.
Versailles and Disneyland in one holiday
Many families visiting Paris at Christmas split their stay between the city, Versailles and Disneyland Paris. Luxberri also offers private transfers to Disneyland Paris and a direct Disneyland to Versailles transfer, so you can move between the two without returning to central Paris.
