Honfleur and Normandy at Christmas make one of the most charming day trips from Paris. In one day you can walk through the Christmas market in Rouen, see the old harbour of Honfleur glowing under its holiday lights, and stop for a seaside stroll in Deauville before driving home. With a private chauffeur, the whole route runs door to door, with no train changes and no rental car on icy winter roads.

This guide explains how to plan a Normandy Christmas day trip in 2026, what to see in each town, and how long the drive takes.

Why visit Normandy in December

Summer brings crowds to the Normandy coast. December is different. The harbour towns are calm, restaurants have space, and the short winter days end with the Christmas lights reflecting on the water. It is the season for apple brandy, oysters, warm cider and log fires.

For visitors staying in Paris over the holidays, Normandy is close enough for a single day yet feels like a complete change of scene: half-timbered houses, fishing boats and the grey-blue light that inspired Monet and the Impressionists.

How far is Honfleur from Paris?

Honfleur is about 200 km west of Paris. By car it takes around 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 30 minutes on the A13 motorway, crossing the Seine on the Pont de Normandie as you arrive. Rouen sits almost exactly halfway, about 1 hour 30 minutes from Paris, which makes it a natural first stop.

There is no direct train from Paris to Honfleur. Travellers going by rail usually change to a bus at Le Havre or Lisieux, which takes much of the short winter day. By car, you arrive in the morning and still have time for three towns.

A suggested Christmas itinerary

Morning: Rouen and its Christmas market. Leave Paris around 8:00 and reach Rouen by 9:30. The Christmas market fills the cathedral square from late November to late December, with wooden chalets selling Normandy cheeses, gingerbread, cider and handmade decorations. Step inside Rouen Cathedral, the building Monet painted more than thirty times, and walk the Rue du Gros-Horloge to see the famous astronomical clock.

Lunch: Honfleur. Continue to Honfleur and arrive for lunch. The restaurants around the Vieux Bassin, the old harbour, serve seafood straight from the Channel: oysters, scallops (in season in winter) and sole. Book ahead on weekends in December.

Afternoon: Honfleur's old town. Walk around the Vieux Bassin, lined with tall slate-fronted houses, and visit the Church of Sainte-Catherine, the largest wooden church in France, built by shipwrights in the 15th century. Honfleur's small Christmas market usually opens in the second half of December, with around thirty chalets. Check the town's programme for 2026 dates.

Late afternoon: the lights and Deauville. Sunset in Normandy comes around 17:00 in December. Stay in Honfleur to see the harbour illuminations, or drive 20 minutes along the coast to Deauville for a walk on Les Planches, the famous boardwalk, and the Christmas decorations around the casino and the grand hotels. Then settle in for the drive back to Paris, arriving around 20:00 to 21:00.

Normandy Christmas markets worth a stop

  • Rouen: the largest Christmas market in Normandy, beside the cathedral, from late November to late December.
  • Honfleur: a smaller, intimate market in the old town, usually in the second half of December.
  • Deauville and Trouville: seaside decorations, festive shop windows and seasonal events in December.
  • Caen: a city-centre market, if you combine Christmas shopping with a visit to the Normandy coast further west.

Dates change every year, so confirm them with each town's tourist office before you choose your day.

Local tastes to bring home

Normandy at Christmas is about food and drink. Ask your chauffeur to stop at a producer in the Pays d'Auge, the countryside south of Honfleur, for:

  • Calvados, the apple brandy of Normandy, aged in oak.
  • Pommeau, a blend of apple juice and Calvados, served as an aperitif.
  • Cider and poiré (pear cider), ideal with the festive meal.
  • Cheese: Camembert, Livarot and Pont-l'Évêque, all made within an hour of Honfleur.

The car has room for bottles and boxes, so you can do your Christmas food shopping on the way.

Practical tips for a winter day trip

  • Leave early. Daylight is short in December. An 8:00 departure gives you the most time in the towns.
  • Dress for the coast. It is often windy and damp on the harbour. Warm layers and waterproof shoes help.
  • Avoid 25 December and 1 January. Many restaurants, shops and markets are closed on those days.
  • Plan for traffic on Fridays. Leaving Paris on a Friday afternoon before the school holidays (which start on 19 December) can add time.
  • Book lunch in advance. The best tables in Honfleur go quickly on December weekends.

Why go with a private chauffeur?

Normandy rewards flexibility. A chauffeur lets you combine three towns in one day, stop at a cider farm on a whim, and stay in Honfleur after dark to see the lights without worrying about the last connection back to Paris. Children can sleep on the way home, and everyone can taste the Calvados.
